Fed: Feeding easter eggs to pets could prove deadly

A peak veterinary group has warned that feeding Easter chocolates to pets could kill them.

The Australian Veterinary Association says cats and dogs are unable to tolerate theobromine
-- a caffeine-like substance found in chocolate -- which increases their heart rate and
releases adrenaline.

High doses of chocolate lead to vomiting, diarrhoea, urination or hyperactivity - and
may ultimately put pets at risk of depression, seizures, coma or death.

The Association says a medium-sized chocolate bar could be deadly and cooking chocolate,
containing a higher level of theobromine, is even more dangerous.
